The English Major and Minor

Required for a major:

Plan I.

Nine Courses

  • an introductory course: E230 The Writer's Voice
  • E260 Shakespeare
  • an American literature course (251, 352-354)
  • one early period British literature course up through 1800 (361-364)
  • one later period British literature course from 1800 to the present (365-368)
  • three additional courses (one of which may be a foreign language literature course when the literature is read in its original language, Linguistics 242, or E380 Internship)
  • E485 Seminar

Senior Project

The English Department does not require a student with multiple majors to complete more than one Senior Project.

Plan II (with writing emphasis).

Students fufill all the normal requirements of Plan I for the major, but include at least three of the following courses: 210, 211, 212, 213, 312, or 314. Writing internships (380) are also available. Students who have completed the appropriate coursework may choose to complete an extensive writing project as their Senior Project. Plan III (teaching).

Same as the major requirements in Plan I except that the electives must be 314, 334, and Linguistics 242. See also correlative requirement for the major and education department for secondary education program requirements.

Correlative requirement for all three of the major plans.

Successful completion of at least one foreign language course at the intermediate level or above (i.e. 201 intermediate level or above; or foreign language proficiency as described in the all-college foreign language requirement option C).

Writing requirement

English 230 is designated for intentional writing instruction in the major.

Requirements for a minor:

  • an introductory course: E230
  • a writing course (210, 211, 212, 213, 312, or 314) OR an advanced British Literature course (361-368)
  • E260 Shakespeare
  • an American literature course (251, 352-354)
  • one elective course

Requirements for the English writing minor:

  • Paideia 111, 112, or equivalent
  • three writing courses (210-213, 312, 314, Communication Studies 252, or special topics courses in writing)
  • one course in literature
  • one elective in the department

Required for a second teaching area:

  • an introductory course: E230
  • E260 Shakespeare
  • E334 Young Adult Liteature
  • an American literature course (251, 352-354)
  • a British literature course (361-368)

Preparation for graduate school:

Students who are thinking about graduate school may wish to take an additional seminar or one or two additional period courses in American or English literature. Because of the heavy emphasis on theory in many graduate schools, students are also encouraged to consider philosophy 352 (feminist philosophy) and/or 430 (philosophy of language).
